2→3 Collection by Natsumi Zama photographed by Yuji Shimazaki

This collection plays with the idea of whether clothes are two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects. When clothing is hung up or folded it looks flat and 2-D, yet when worn on the human body it becomes three-dimensional. The designer explains, “through the clothing design, I search how the garment interacts with the body with a fresh approach featuring simple and sophisticated style” (x). The Japanese designer’s inspiration for the collection was a kimono. The traditional Japanese garment, which even as a flat piece of cloth, can become three-dimensional to fit to the human body when worn. The draping fabric of this collection looks both angelic and elegant. The conceptual transformation of a two-dimensional item hanging in your closet to a functional and wearable piece is an example of creativity and simplicity at their best.
